Hot Asphalt Patching

Pothole and asphalt patch repair in Northfield, MN.

What is Hot Asphalt Patching

Hot asphalt patching can be used to repair large cracks, potholes, depressions and various surface level or full depth damages. The hot asphalt can be applied by direct pour or after cutting out the damaged area.

For fast and simple repairs, a direct pour can be done, followed by proper compacting. This repair, while quick, doesn't look as professional and may fail quicker than a cut and replace patch.

A cut and replace removes the area around the defect and allows proper surface areas for the hot asphalt to adhere to. This repair can be used for a number of asphalt defects and will result in a professional looking patch. This methos also allows for base repair as well. The con to this repair is that it takes longer to do, costs more and will be affecting the the surrounding base/asphalt over time.

What is the Process for a Cut and Replace

We start by identifying the damaged area. Once that is determined, we layout the cut lines. This helps to keep the cuts relatively straight. A concrete/asphalt saw is then used to cut and remove the old asphalt. If any base repairs are needed this is when that will be done. At a minimum, the base will be recompacted prior to adding in the new asphalt. A tack/bonding liquid will be added to the adjacent asphalt/concrete edges to help the new asphalt bond to the surrounding pavement. Once the hot asphalt is added, it will be leveled out and compacted to finish.

The end result will be a lasting repair that will look professional, improve appearances and limit injuries or vehicle damages.

If the repair is done during the asphalt plant season, fresh asphalt will be used to complete the repair. If done during the off season(winter) preformed new asphalt bricks will be reheated and used or the old asphalt will be recycled and reused. When reusing the asphalt, it is reheated in an asphalt reclaimer, a rejuvenating liquid will be added and the asphalt will be used to fill in the patch. The rejuvenator replenishes the asphalt to make it like new.

What Will it Look Like When done

Since new/refreshed asphalt is used, the patch will be a rich black. This will standout against the gray aging asphalt it will likely be surrounded by. The surface texture may vary when compared to the surrounding area. The height of the patch will be slightly raised to prevent pooling in the repair area. The patch will standout, but will gray over time.
